I must confess I have never been much of an admirer of Microsoft and when I found out that the 2007 version of Office would have dramatic changes, I was less enthusiastic. You have to understand, I had really got very familiar with Office 2003, and now everything was going to change…
Yes, at first it was a bit more difficult, but to my surprise, when I got used to it, it was great! This suite has evolved more than significantly from its predecessor, it took the long road from a suite of personal productivity products to a more complete and integrated system. It uses all the tools we, the users knew and were familiar with, and a set of applications, server services and solutions which will work jointly to provide solutions to most business problems.
The Ribbon interface gives users access to many features that somehow were a bit difficult to find behind submenus. One appreciated feature that is surprisingly found is Microsoft Outlook’s built-in indexing and RSS feeds.
A rather new format for tech newbies: XML documents, which will eliminate the risk of infection through macros. Fortunately for those who are still using Office 2003, Microsoft will provide a compatibility update (about 27MB) so that you don’t have to buy the new suite, at least for now.
To sum up, the new interface, once you use it a few times, proves to be very easy; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access, Project, InfoPath, Visio, and OneNote will do what they used to do before, but more easily.
For the business user this system will be a significant enhancement, it will solve many problems and will allow making the jump from the personal to the professional use.
Advantages:
- Outlook is improved. Shows brings light to previous hidden functions.Smaller application and file sizes
Disadvantages:
- Compatibility problems between Office 2003 and 2007, must install converters. Learning a whole new system, new interface isn't always intuitive.
